Seeing as it is Halloween, it seems appropriate to ask: “What mask(s) and costume(s) do you wear daily? Do you use them to trick yourself into believing you’re something you’re not or as a treat to enhance all that you already are?” You read that last question correct: Masks and costumes CAN serve a positive purpose too when they are consciously chosen BY you instead of unconsciously assigned TO you.
Accompanying each “tricky” mask and costume is the most destructive three-word phrase that you’ll ever tell Yourself is true: “I don’t know.” Likewise, the antidote to this infectious deception is to “treat” yourself by saying “I know what’s True for me.” Again, masks and costumes can amplify what you Know is True for you or they can fan the lying flame of “indecision” into a raging bonfire of inner stagnation.
In order to explore and expose the intention behind the masks and costumes though you need to discover the purpose for their presence. Another way to reveal purpose is to ask yourself “What is this (mask/costume) for?” For instance if you’re wearing a “mask” of affordability in terms of how you price your services because your family always tells you that your work is worthless, then the affordability of your offerings is masking your lack of self-worth.
Potential clients sense the inauthentic, indecisive tone of your pitch even when the decision to price low wasn’t really about them at all. It came from a long-played role as the “Worthless” Son or Daughter in your family. In order to stop the endless replay of the same tragedy recurring regardless of location or situation, you must choose to re-cast yourself into a new role: Hero.
In your new role you get to finally change your energetic “wardrobe” into one fitting a protagonist on every level. Now, your consciously chosen attire enhances your role, not diminishes it.
Returning to the previous “affordable” pricing example, you now have a conscious choice. Will you offer affordable rates as a heroic gesture driven by sharing your value from a place of abundance, not lack? Or, will you raise your rates because you know you’re “worth” it because you are the hero or heroine of your story?
No matter what you choose, your conscious costume as the Hero aligns with your offer and therefore will reflect authenticity to your potential customers. It’s up to you “how” you want to price your work because your value is already a known quantity, not one that needs to be proved or even worse, forged.
Here’s another example of how important it is to unmask the biggest little lie of “I don’t know” within your Conscious Mind.
Think back to a time in your life when “impossible” didn’t exist yet. If you’re like most, my question transported you to a moment from your early childhood. I’m right there with you, but I mean…, really? Why do possibilities seem to carry an age limit?
As a toddler, you trusted your instincts, rarely (if ever) filtered your responses, and overall lived in the moment. In time, a “good” parent guided you to dull the innate connection to your Intuition in lieu of conforming to society’s norms and expectations. By the dawn of your quarter-century mark birthday, most of you had forgotten the sound of your own Inner Voice.
Unless you made some recent, conscious choice to “get to know” Yourself like you did as a child, you’re probably still allowing the biggest little lie to perpetuate within your Mind: “I don’t know…” Here’s the thing though; you do! You know, period. You don’t need to learn how to know what’s true for you. What you need to learn is how to unlearn that you don’t know all that you already know. Simple, right?
However, as in every case, simple doesn’t necessarily equate with easy. You have a lifetime of unlearning “not knowing” to undertake. It might take a minute or even two to see the shift and then even a few more to choose to consciously keep the change.
On the surface “I don’t know” seems harmless. And yet, it’s beyond destructive when deconstructed.
Knowing Yourself (All of You IS You) is the prerequisite to Loving Yourself. Not knowing Yourself is choosing the opposite of Love…fearing yourself. Once the lie of fear’s mask is chosen, loving yourself seems far from your truth.
That’s why it’s crucial to stop tricking yourself once and for all with the lie of indecision and start treating yourself to the experience of fully Loving Yourself as your Truth.
Here’s My 2-Step Process to Unlearning “Not Knowing”:
- Anytime you’re tempted to say “I think,” say “I know.”
- Anytime you want to say “I don’t know,” take a deep breath, place your hand on your heart and say, “I know what’s true for me” instead.
Looks simple, right? (I’ll save reiterating the “not easy” rhetoric for a future post.)
Try out my process for a week. When you see the results, add another week, and so on… See what unfolds in your life once you remember to forget the notion of “not knowing” from your mindset.
